Top 5 Modern Linux Distributions

5. Netrunner

Netrunner’s UI is very intuitive and user friendly. This distribution is based on Kubuntu but it comes with bundled softwares and features that are not available in Kubuntu.

Installation process is similar to Kubuntu except, Kubuntu’s installer lists down processes while installation is going on. The bundled softwares, screencasting tools, video editors and games are really good in Netrunner. Office suits, internet tools and even skype comes preinstalled in Netrunner.

It comes with MUON package manager which is far more advanced than Ubuntu Software Centre.

4. Zorin OS

The UI of Zorin is very similar to any version of Windows OS. The installer of Zorin is similar to the Ubuntu and it is very easy to install. The OS comes with all media codecs presintalled.

VLC Media player, Banshee audio player, LibreOffice suit, GIMP image editor are bundled in Zorin. There is a tool called PlayOnLinux that comes with Zorin which makes it possible to run any Windows software.

The OS comes with multiple customization options too, such as, theme changer, desktop effects etc. The OS has few downsides. Zorin uses Ubuntu Software Centre which lacks in number of softwares supported by Zorin. 

3. PCLinuxOS

PCLinuxOS is based on Debian. This Linux distribution supports KDE environment in excellent way. The installer of PCLinuxOS is similar to that of Linux Mint. The desktop UI comes with panel, icon layout and menu.

PCLinuxOS comes with audio applications, dropbox and LibreOffice suit preinstalled. It has more number of games and graphic applications as compared to Linux Mint or Ubuntu.

Package manager that comes with PCLinuxOS is quite user friendly.

2. Ubuntu

Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution that is available out there. It comes with Unity interface which adds prettier feel to the OS. The OS has Marmite effect.

The features and tools in Ubuntu are far better than any version of Windows. The user interface is very user friendly. The installer is very easy to use too. The Ubuntu provides more number of stable builds than any other Linux distributions. Most of popular softwares are available for Ubuntu OS. User can install add-on packages while installing the OS also. Otherwise, there is always an option to install extra packages such as MP3s, fonts and Flash lateron. 

This Linux Distribution has the best developers and tech support. The only downside of this distribution is the software center.

1. Linux Mint

Linux Mint is number 1 on this list and in the Distrowatch rankings for a very good reason.

This Linux distribution uses same installer as Ubuntu. The installation process of Linux Mint is very easy. The installer shows all on-going installation process. The installation hardly takes 10-15 mins.

The OS is based on Cinnamon desktop unlike Unity in Ubuntu. Cinnamon desktop is far more user friendly than any other UI out there. The OS is highly integrated with MP3 and Flash. The desktop has menu option in bottom left corner while system icons in bottom right corner. 

LinuxMint comes with LibreOffice, Banshee audio, VLC media player and GIMP editor preloaded. The STEAM does not come pre-installed in LinuxMint but it can be installed lateron using package manager. The software center for Mint is is more user friendly than Ubuntu Software Center.
